Davao Eagles Intensify Training Regimen for Palarong Pambansa Title Defense
The Davao Eagles have kicked their preparations into high gear for the upcoming Palarong Pambansa boys' secondary basketball tournament, with a clear mission: to defend their national title. Head coach Jess Linus L. Evangelio is leaving no stone unturned, stressing the importance of discipline, intensity, and unwavering team commitment as they gear up for the competition.
Building on Past Success
Fresh off their gold medal victory in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa, where they defeated Western Visayas 67–51 in Ilocos Norte, the Eagles are determined to replicate that success. Evangelio shared that the team officially resumed training last week after a brief hiatus, diving straight into rigorous sessions to set the tone for the season ahead.
In an interview with SunStar Davao, Evangelio highlighted the critical nature of their early efforts: "Day 1 was a test of character—whether they truly want to be back-to-back Palarong Pambansa champions or give up because of the difficulty." This mindset underscores the team's dedication from the outset.
Daily Grind and Strategic Focus
The Eagles are now engaged in daily training, logging three to four hours of practice at Macs Gym in Marfori Subdivision, Davao City. Evangelio noted, "From Monday to Sunday, we train every day. Everyone understands the level of commitment required." This relentless schedule is designed to build endurance and cohesion.
Training sessions are strategically focused on strength and conditioning to help the team compete against larger opponents. Evangelio explained, "Compared to other teams in Palarong Pambansa, they are bigger than us, so we need to be stronger. We combine gym work, sprinting, and conditioning. We may not be the tallest, but we will make sure we are the hardest-working team."
Overcoming Pressure with Determination
Despite the pressure that comes with defending a title, Evangelio remains confident in his team's focus. He stated, "After winning the Palarong Pambansa gold last school year, we are now focused on earning it again—we're praying, preparing, and working hard to defend our title. Our goal from Day 1 is to win again. We know it's harder to go back-to-back because every team wants to beat us. That's why we will work harder and give our best."
