Wembanyama's Historic Playoff Debut Powers Spurs to Victory Over Trail Blazers
Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs delivered a stunning performance in his playoff debut, scoring 35 points to lead his team to a 111-98 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series. The game took place on Sunday night, which was Monday, April 20, 2026, in the Philippines, as reported by the Associated Press.
Record-Breaking Performance
Wembanyama erupted for 21 points in the first half, marking the most points in the opening half of a playoff debut since the NBA began tracking play-by-play data in 1997. His 35-point total also set a new Spurs franchise record for a playoff debut, surpassing the previous mark of 32 points set by Tim Duncan in 1998.
Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each contributed 17 points and combined for 15 assists, helping San Antonio secure its first playoff victory since 2019. On the Trail Blazers' side, Deni Avdija led with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Scoot Henderson added 18 points. Portland earned the No. 7 seed through the play-in tournament.
Electric Atmosphere and Key Plays
The atmosphere at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio was electric, with a sellout crowd witnessing the Spurs' first playoff game since 2019. Among the attendees were franchise legends Tim Duncan and David Robinson, who sat courtside to support the team's postseason return.
Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 star from France and finalist for both the NBA Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards, showcased his skills with a standout play in the first quarter. He dribbled behind his back to evade Avdija at halfcourt, backed him down near the top of the key, spun past him, and drove unimpeded for a powerful two-handed dunk.
Wembanyama and Castle set the tone early, combining for 19 of the Spurs' 30 points in the opening quarter. Portland attempted a rally in the second half, with Henderson hitting a three-pointer and adding a fastbreak layup during an 8-0 run that cut a 16-point deficit to just two, 59-57, early in the third quarter.
Spurs Regain Control
San Antonio quickly responded by tightening its defense and regaining momentum. In the third period, Luke Kornet and Devin Vassell combined to block Portland rookie Donovan Clingan on the same possession, sparking the Spurs' resurgence. Vassell then hit back-to-back three-pointers, extending San Antonio's lead to 72-61 with five minutes remaining in the quarter, as the Spurs steadily pulled away.
Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, which is Wednesday in the Philippines, in San Antonio before the series shifts to Portland.

Paolo Banchero led the Magic with 23 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Cade Cunningham scored a playoff career-high 39 points for Detroit. The victory extended Detroit's home playoff losing streak to 11 games, the longest in NBA history, dating back to 2008.
