Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic has made it clear that he wants to spend his entire NBA career with the team, but he is not rushing to sign a contract extension this offseason. According to a report from ESPN, the three-time NBA MVP is eligible for a five-year supermax contract worth $359 million, which would become available in the summer of 2027.
Potential Record-Breaking Deal
If Jokic were to sign such a deal, it would be the largest contract in NBA history. The $359 million figure surpasses previous record contracts held by players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic himself, who signed a five-year, $270 million supermax extension in 2022.
The supermax eligibility is based on Jokic's achievements, including winning MVP awards and making All-NBA teams. Under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, players with certain accolades can sign for up to 35% of the salary cap, with 8% annual raises.
Jokic's Stance on Extension
Despite the potential for a historic payday, Jokic is not eager to lock in an extension immediately. The Serbian center has consistently expressed loyalty to the Nuggets organization and the city of Denver. He has stated that his priority is to win championships rather than maximize his earnings.
"I want to be here for my whole career," Jokic said in a previous interview. "But I'm not thinking about the contract right now. I just want to play basketball and help the team win."
Timing and Implications
The Nuggets and Jokic have time to negotiate. His current contract runs through the 2027-28 season, with a player option for 2028-29. By waiting until 2027, Jokic could potentially sign an even larger deal if the salary cap increases.
The decision not to rush an extension could also benefit the Nuggets financially, allowing them to maintain flexibility in building a competitive roster around Jokic. Denver has been a top contender in the Western Conference, winning the NBA championship in 2023.
ESPN's report indicates that Jokic's camp and the Nuggets have had preliminary discussions, but no formal negotiations have taken place. The team has expressed confidence that Jokic will remain a Nugget for life.
