Dumanjug to Host Opening Ceremony for Inaugural Calderon Cup Basketball Tournament

The town of Dumanjug is set to host the opening ceremony of the 1st Calderon Cup Inter-Town 21-Under basketball tournament on March 21, 2026. This event marks the beginning of a two-month competition that will showcase young talent from across the 7th District of Cebu Province.

Coordination Meeting Finalizes Team Lineups

Organizers held a coordination meeting with team coaches and representatives at the Moalboal Municipal Hall on Friday, February 20, 2026. During this meeting, all eight participating teams submitted their final player lineups before the deadline, ensuring everything is in place for the tournament's start.

Christopher Co of Dumanjug expressed confidence in the town's readiness to host the event. He emphasized that the tournament provides a valuable platform for young players to display their skills and enhance their gameplay, contributing to local sports development.

Participating Towns and Event Details

The eight towns competing in the Calderon Cup are Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc, and Ginatilan. The opening program will feature a parade of the teams and their muses, with notable attendees expected, including Congresswoman Patsy Calderon, town mayors, and other distinguished guests.

Tournament Format and Prizes

The teams are divided into two groups, each playing in a double round-robin format where every team faces the others in its group twice. After the elimination round, the top team from each group advances directly to the semifinals. The second- and third-place teams will compete in crossover quarterfinal games to determine the remaining semifinal spots.

Winners of the tournament will be awarded trophies and cash prizes. This competition is part of the Grassroots Sports Development Program initiated by Congresswoman Calderon, aimed at fostering athletic talent at the community level.

Organizing Committee

The event is organized by a committee led by Atty. Ramil Abing, with Jun Migallen serving as commissioner and Rey Cañete as deputy commissioner. Their efforts ensure the smooth execution of this inaugural tournament, promoting sportsmanship and community engagement.
