Camiguin Welcomes Inaugural Ironman 5150 Triathlon with Global Athlete Participation
Camiguin, often called the "Island Born of Fire" due to its high concentration of volcanoes, is set to host its first-ever Ironman 5150 event on May 3. This Olympic-distance triathlon will attract athletes from 13 countries, converging in Northern Mindanao for a race that combines challenging terrain with stunning natural scenery. The event marks a significant milestone for the province, positioning it as a new destination for endurance sports enthusiasts worldwide.
Provincial Government and Organizers Collaborate for World-Class Event
Governor Xavier Jesus Romualdo has pledged full support for the Ironman 5150 Camiguin, emphasizing the province's commitment to hosting a successful race. In recent coordination meetings, the provincial government, including officials like Provincial Tourism Officer Candice Borromeo-Dael and Leonides Oclarit of the Provincial Planning and Development Office, worked closely with Sunrise Events, Inc. (SEI). SEI president Princess Galura highlighted the importance of aligning operations with global standards to ensure athlete safety, efficiency, and overall race quality. This collaboration underscores a shared vision to deliver an exceptional experience for participants and spectators alike.
Part of Broader Initiative to Promote Sports Tourism in the Philippines
The Ironman 5150 Camiguin is a key component of the inaugural 5150 Triathlon Islands of the Philippines Series, a four-leg circuit designed to showcase the country's most scenic island destinations through Olympic-distance racing. The series began in Guimaras last month, with Bohol hosting the third leg on July 12, and will conclude on September 20 at Samal Island in Davao City. This initiative is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, in partnership with the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Council and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority, all aiming to establish the Philippines as a premier hub for endurance sports and tourism.
Elite Athletes and Community Engagement Highlight the Event
Approximately 300 participants from around the globe are expected to compete, including Filipino elite standout Bea Quiambao, who recently won the Ironman 70.3 Davao. The event features the PSC Filipino Elite Category, which gathers top local triathletes, such as national team members and emerging talents, to foster homegrown athletic development. Additionally, the Sunrise Sprint, a shorter-distance race, is included to make triathlon more accessible to beginners and recreational participants, encouraging grassroots growth and community involvement. Camiguin's natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere are anticipated to provide a unique backdrop, enhancing the overall appeal of this landmark sporting occasion.
