UAAP Volleyball Introduces Green Card System to Reward Fair Play in Season 88
UAAP Volleyball Launches Green Card System for Fair Play

The University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) is launching an innovative system designed to recognize and reward fair play, aiming to foster honesty and sportsmanship throughout the upcoming Season 88 collegiate volleyball tournament. The competition is set to commence at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on February 14, 2026.

Groundbreaking Green Card Initiative

This pioneering initiative involves the issuance of green cards across both the men's and women's tournaments, which feature eight teams each. Under the new rule, a player who voluntarily admits to a block touch or net touch during a match will be awarded a green card. This measure is specifically crafted to streamline the adjudication process and minimize the need for unnecessary video challenges, thereby enhancing the flow of the game.

Sportsmanship Award and Season Goals

At the conclusion of the season, the team that accumulates the highest number of green cards will receive the prestigious Sportsmanship Award, in addition to the traditional individual accolades. UAAP commissioner Michael Verano emphasized the importance of this innovation during a press conference held at the MOA Arena on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

"The most important innovation we'll implement for Season 88 is the green card system," Verano stated. "This will reward student-athletes for their honesty and sportsmanship. The green card will also serve as a key criterion for honoring them with the Sportsmanship Award at the end of the season."

Season 88 Opening Matches and Team Highlights

The tournament kicks off with a Valentine's Day clash between De La Salle University and Far Eastern University on February 14. This will be followed by a highly anticipated rematch of the Season 86 Finals on February 15, featuring defending champion National University against the University of Santo Tomas.

National University's Championship Aspirations

Despite the absence of star players Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon, the Lady Bulldogs remain a focal point of attention. They boast an intact core, including setter Lams Lamina and outside spiker Vange Alinsug, along with prized rookie Sam Cantada. Under the guidance of new head coach Regine Diego, the team is poised to strengthen their bid for a three-peat championship.

"I don't feel like I'm new to NU since I was here before," Diego remarked. "I'm very happy to share the court with everyone, and hopefully, we can defend the championship." Diego previously led the program's girls' volleyball team, bringing valuable experience to her new role.

Men's Team Dynamics and Pressure

On the men's side, the Bulldogs are aiming for a sixth consecutive title with a cohesive lineup that includes middle blocker Peng Taguibolos, opposite spiker Leo Ordiales, Buds Buddin, and Jade Disquitado. All four players are members of the national team that competed in the 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship, adding depth and talent to the squad.

Bulldogs head coach Dante Alinsunurin addressed the inherent pressure of each season, stating, "For us, every season brings pressure. What's really important is to solve the problems we encounter during games and, of course, outside of training. We focus on maintaining a mindset that ensures we always give our best whenever we're on the court."

This comprehensive approach, combining the new fair play system with competitive team dynamics, sets the stage for an exciting and sportsmanship-driven Season 88 of UAAP volleyball.
