Bamboo Craftsman Leon Layar Perseveres Through Economic Crisis in Philippines
Despite the ongoing economic crisis in the Philippines, Leon Layar, a 63-year-old bamboo craftsman, continues to meticulously craft furniture sets made from bamboo. For three decades, Layar has relied on this traditional artisanal work as his primary source of livelihood, supporting his family and educating his two children, who have now graduated, with the help of his wife, Airiealni Layar.
Economic Challenges Impacting Small Enterprises
Recent economic challenges, including high inflation, have severely affected small and medium enterprises like Layar's bamboo crafting business. The rising costs of materials and transportation have increased production expenses, while consumer demand for non-essential items such as bamboo furniture has declined. Layar notes that customers are prioritizing basic needs like food over furniture purchases, making it difficult to maintain a stable income.
Layar shared that the struggles began during the Covid-19 pandemic, when movement restrictions limited production and sales. Although there was a gradual recovery in subsequent years, conditions have worsened this year. He stated, "Mga tulo na ka semana, walay halin, mag standby rajud tawon" (It has been about three weeks with no sales, we are just really on standby).
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Despite these difficulties, Layar remains committed to his craft, continuing to produce bamboo items to sustain his livelihood. Local bamboo sellers are experiencing similar challenges as inflation impacts both supply and demand, but Layar's perseverance highlights the resilience of traditional artisans. He added, "Lisod jud siya kay ang siguradoon sa mga tao kay pagkaon ra gyud" (It is really difficult because what people prioritize is only food).
As inflation persists, small-scale workers like Layar face uncertainty in maintaining daily earnings. Without a significant improvement in consumer spending power or a decrease in material costs, the future of traditional bamboo crafting remains at risk. However, Layar's dedication serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of artisans in the Philippines.
