Cebu Event Suppliers Rally Against Hotel's Exclusive Policy, Citing Threats to Local Economy
A coalition of more than a hundred event suppliers based in Cebu has publicly called on the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino to reconsider a recently implemented exclusivity policy. The group argues that this new rule unfairly sidelines local businesses and puts hundreds of jobs at risk in the vibrant events industry of the region.
Policy Sparks Outcry from Local Business Community
During a press briefing held on Friday, February 6, 2026, coalition representatives detailed their concerns. The policy, issued on January 15, 2026, and enforced immediately, requires clients using the hotel's Pacific Grand Ballroom to hire Blaster Pro Audio, a service provider based in Cagayan de Oro, for all event production needs. This mandate effectively bars Cebuano suppliers from servicing a wide range of events at the venue, including weddings, trade expos, and concerts.
The coalition, which includes prominent local firms such as Power Link, Events Beyond Compare, and Vibe Craft Audio, contends that this move restricts client freedom and disrupts long-standing business relationships. Representatives like Karl Echiverri, Charmagne Ferenal-Tanseco, Pinky Ferenal-Chio, and Von Tanseco emphasized that the policy excludes local providers who have historically supported the hotel's events.
Appeals for Government Intervention and Fair Market Access
In response to the policy change, the coalition has appealed to Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival to intervene. They argue that the City Government has a crucial role in safeguarding local trade and ensuring fair market access, particularly for Cebu-based enterprises operating within city limits. The group asserts that such exclusivity agreements undermine the economic vitality of the local community.
Additionally, the coalition has taken formal steps by sending a separate letter to the Philippine Competition Commission. This letter requests an investigation into potential anti-competitive behavior, highlighting concerns that the policy may violate fair trade practices and harm consumer choice.
Client Concerns and Calls for Transitional Measures
The coalition reports that clients have expressed significant concern over the lack of choice imposed by the new policy. Many have faced disruptions to previously agreed arrangements with local suppliers, leading to logistical challenges and potential financial losses. To address these issues, the group is urging the hotel to honor contracts and bookings made before the January 15 policy took effect.
Furthermore, they are requesting a transition period for projects already in the pipeline, allowing local suppliers to complete ongoing work without abrupt termination. This measure aims to mitigate the immediate impact on jobs and business operations while discussions continue.
Hotel's Response and Ongoing Developments
As of the latest updates, a representative of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino has indicated that management has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter. The coalition remains hopeful for a constructive dialogue to resolve the dispute and protect the interests of Cebu's event industry stakeholders.
This situation underscores broader issues of local business protection and competitive fairness in the hospitality and events sectors, with potential implications for similar policies elsewhere in the Philippines.
