President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has taken decisive action by ordering a thorough investigation into Cebu's flood control systems following devastating floods that submerged various parts of the province during recent heavy rainfall.
The presidential directive came after widespread flooding exposed potential deficiencies in the multi-billion peso drainage projects implemented across Cebu. "The President wants to determine why, despite the huge funds allocated for these projects, flooding persists in many areas of Cebu," stated a Malacañang official.
Questioning Billions in Infrastructure Spending
During a situation briefing at the Mandaue City Command Center, President Marcos expressed serious concerns about the effectiveness of the massive investments made in flood mitigation. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has implemented numerous drainage and flood control projects throughout Cebu, with costs running into billions of pesos.
"We are looking at all the flood control projects that we have done. We will find out why it's still flooding," the President emphasized during his assessment of the situation.
Immediate Relief and Long-Term Solutions
While addressing the immediate needs of affected residents, President Marcos also focused on long-term solutions. He instructed the DPWH to conduct comprehensive technical studies to identify the root causes of the persistent flooding problems.
