DepEd Implements Private School Leasing to Address Classroom Shortage

The Department of Education (DepEd) is now aggressively pushing for widespread classroom leasing as an immediate and innovative solution to the critical problem of classroom shortages in public schools across the nation. This initiative is a direct response to the overcrowding and class shifting schedules that have plagued the education system.

Formal Agreement with Local Governments

In connection with this effort, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is scheduled to be signed this week between the department and the country's governors. This agreement will formalize the mechanism for leasing vacant buildings from private institutions, creating a structured framework for the program.

According to Education Secretary Sonny Angara, this initiative is based on the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to strengthen public-private partnerships within the education sector. The primary goal of the program is to significantly reduce, if not completely eliminate, student overcrowding and the disruptive class shifting schedules that have become commonplace.

Proven Strategy in Laguna

The effectiveness of this strategy was demonstrated during the secretary's recent visit to the Don Manuel Rivera Memorial Integrated National High School Extension in Laguna. At this school, the shifting schedule for senior high school students was completely resolved after utilizing facilities that were previously unused by the private sector.

This successful implementation serves as a model for how the program can work effectively in practice, providing tangible benefits to students and educators alike.

Accelerating Available Space Identification

Through the agreement with local government units, the identification of available spaces that can be leased for the benefit of students is expected to be accelerated. This streamlined process will enable quicker deployment of additional classroom resources where they are most needed.

The leasing program represents a practical approach to addressing infrastructure gaps while permanent solutions are developed. By tapping into existing private sector resources, DepEd aims to provide immediate relief to schools struggling with insufficient classroom space.

This public-private partnership model not only addresses the physical shortage of classrooms but also fosters collaboration between government and private institutions for the betterment of the education system. The program is designed to be flexible and responsive to local needs while maintaining educational standards.
