Cardinal Advincula: Santacruzan Not a Beauty Pageant

Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula has issued a clear reminder that the Santacruzan is a religious activity and not a beauty pageant. In a report by CBCP News, Advincula urged the Filipino faithful to reflect on the true significance of the annual May tradition.

Religious Significance Over Pageantry

“The Santacruzan is not merely a colorful tradition, and certainly not a beauty pageant, but an invitation and reminder for us to take pride in and live out our faith,” Advincula said. He emphasized that the tradition centers on St. Helena and her son, Constantine, as they search for the True Cross.

Deeper Meaning of the Cross

“We must commemorate not only the search of St. Helena for the Holy Cross, but also the deeper meaning of the Cross in our lives as Christians,” Advincula stated. He explained that the event should inspire Filipinos to face life’s challenges while keeping their faith.

“May we learn to carry the crosses of our daily lives with hope and love. May we remain steadfast in faith and united as one Church,” Advincula added.

Tradition Across the Philippines

The Santacruzan is a traditional procession held in many cities, towns, and small communities throughout the Philippines during May. The procession features female participants representing biblical figures, wearing traditional Filipiniana gowns, as they parade around the town.

This annual observance serves as a vibrant expression of Filipino Catholic faith, reminding participants and spectators alike of the enduring message of the Cross.
