The Department of Health (DOH) reported that leptospirosis cases in the Philippines reached 2,177 from January 4 to June 6, 2026, a 6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The DOH Epidemiology Bureau noted that most cases came from Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and CALABARZON, areas frequently affected by flooding and prolonged water exposure.
Death Toll Rises to 77
This year, 77 deaths from leptospirosis have been recorded, up from 70 deaths in the same period last year. The DOH reminded the public to avoid wading through floodwaters, especially with open wounds, and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, red eyes, or jaundice appear.
Preventive Measures and Campaigns
The DOH has intensified information campaigns in barangays and schools, while local governments provide doxycycline prophylaxis for high-risk individuals like rescue workers and street sweepers. The DOH maintains a high alert level for leptospirosis during the rainy season and continues to monitor hospitals to ensure adequate medicine and facilities for patients.
