DENR-Davao Urges Public to Report Marine Wildlife Strandings After Dolphin Death
DENR-Davao Urges Reporting Marine Wildlife Strandings

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Davao Region (DENR-Davao) has called on the public to immediately report sightings and strandings of marine wildlife following the stranding of a bottlenose dolphin along the coastline of Sitio Asinan, Barangay Cadunan, Mabini, Davao de Oro.

Call for Collective Action

In a Facebook post on May 5, 2026, DENR-Davao emphasized the importance of community cooperation: “By working together, we can help safeguard our marine biodiversity and ensure that our oceans remain vibrant and life-sustaining for generations to come.” The agency urged residents to report any wildlife sightings, stranded animals, and possible violations of Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001, to the appropriate authorities.

Details of the Incident

An 8.75-foot bottlenose dolphin was found stranded within the Mabini Protected Landscape and Seascape (MPLS). Resident Goel B. Canda first spotted the animal and promptly alerted local authorities. Despite a swift rescue response, the dolphin had already sustained multiple injuries, visible wounds, and a parasitic infestation that ultimately led to its death.

Underlying Threats to Marine Life

DENR-Davao noted that while strandings can occur naturally, many cases are linked to human activities. These include habitat degradation, marine pollution, entanglement in fishing gear, vessel strikes, and disease. The incident underscores the urgent need for collective action to protect marine wildlife.

Strengthening Response Measures

Following the event, the DENR-Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) in Mabini reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing rapid response measures and marine wildlife monitoring. The office continues to intensify efforts to address the impacts of coastal development and other human activities on critical marine habitats.

Importance of Cetaceans

According to the World Cetacean Alliance, bottlenose dolphins belong to the cetacean family, which also includes whales and porpoises. These marine mammals play a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems by contributing to carbon cycling and nutrient recycling, which boost marine productivity. They also serve as sentinel species, reflecting the overall health of the world’s oceans.
