Ebola Outbreak in Congo: Death Toll Exceeds 100, Africa CDC Reports
Ebola Death Toll in Congo Surpasses 100

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has surpassed 100, with over 390 suspected cases, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The virus has also been detected in Uganda, where two confirmed cases and one death have been reported.

International Spread and Response

Among the confirmed infected individuals is an American doctor in the DRC, who will be transferred to Germany for treatment. Reports indicate that several Americans may have been exposed to the virus, and the United States government is providing assistance.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, but emphasized that it is far from becoming a pandemic. However, the WHO warned strict adherence to protocols is essential, especially regarding burials of deceased individuals, due to the high risk of virus transmission.

Regional and Global Measures

Neighboring countries such as Rwanda and Nigeria have implemented border screening as a preventive measure. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk to the United States remains low, but travelers arriving from affected areas are being monitored. The US has issued a Level 4 travel advisory, the highest warning, against travel to the DRC.

Currently, there is no approved drug or vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. Africa CDC and WHO are urging the public to follow protocols and strengthen community surveillance to curb the spread of the virus.
