Iloilo City Boosts Science-Based River Protection Training

Iloilo City is reinforcing its commitment to science-based environmental protection through a comprehensive two-day Trainers’ Training on Iloilo River Fish Diversity and Ecology, held on April 28 to 29, 2026. The initiative aims to equip stakeholders and local government unit (LGU) representatives with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective, scientifically grounded monitoring of the Iloilo River.

Training Leadership and Collaboration

The training was spearheaded by the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences-Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (CFOS-IMFO) Marine Ecology Laboratory, in collaboration with the Office of the City Agriculturist-Fisheries Section. This partnership ensures that the training is rooted in the latest scientific research and best practices in aquatic ecosystem management.

Participants and Sessions

Participants included representatives from the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENRO), the Office of the City Planning and Development Coordinator (OCPDC), the Office of the City Agriculturist (OCAg), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the PNP Maritime Group, and local fisherfolk. They actively engaged in sessions covering:

  • Monitoring of Iloilo River Fish Diversity and Ecology, including an Action Planning Workshop

These sessions were designed to provide hands-on experience and practical tools for ongoing monitoring efforts.

Expert Trainers

Dr. Sheila Mae Santander-De Leon and Precious Nikola Gaurana, MSc., both from UPV CFOS-IMFO, served as resource speakers and trainers during the activity. Their expertise in marine ecology and fisheries science ensured that participants received high-quality instruction and guidance.

This training marks a significant step forward in Iloilo City’s efforts to protect and restore the ecological health of the Iloilo River, a vital waterway for the region.
