The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Central Visayas has issued a strong reminder for the public to strictly follow maritime safety regulations. This call comes in the wake of a successful rescue operation where 18 individuals were saved after their motorized banca capsized near Gilutungan Island amid the busy holiday travel period.
Timely Rescue Averts Tragedy
The incident occurred on December 28, 2025. The motorized banca named Jhon David, which was traveling from Getafe, Bohol to Cebu City, reportedly became unstable in the waters near Gilutungan Island. The vessel later drifted toward the sea off Cuaming Island in Bohol.
Coast Guard teams in Cordova, Cebu, swiftly mobilized after the Passenger Assistance Center at the RoRo Port received reports of the maritime incident. As part of Oplan Biyaheng Ayos Pasko 2025, search and rescue operations were launched around 1:20 p.m.
Coordinated Response Saves All Onboard
The response was swift and effective. The crew of MV Ocean Jet 10 played a crucial role, successfully rescuing 14 passengers and transporting them safely to Pier 1 in Cebu City. The operator of the motorized banca and his son were also pulled to safety. No serious injuries were reported among any of the passengers or crew.
Following the rescue, the PCG offered assistance to the survivors and began a preliminary investigation into the cause of the capsizing. The overturned vessel was later towed and secured near the Cordova Reef.
PCG Stresses Vigilance During Peak Travel
In a public announcement on Monday, December 29, 2025, the Coast Guard underscored the importance of caution. “The PCG continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and observe maritime safety measures, especially during peak travel periods,” the statement read. The agency emphasized that adherence to safety protocols is non-negotiable, particularly with the increased number of travelers during the holiday season.
This incident highlights the ever-present risks of sea travel and the critical importance of heeding official safety advisories to prevent accidents and ensure safe journeys for all.
