A major fire ripped through a fireworks market in Barili, Cebu, on Sunday night, December 28, 2025, leaving a trail of destruction and an estimated P2 million in losses.
Fast-Moving Inferno at Sitio Estaca
The blaze erupted at around 9:00 PM at Stall Number 15 in the fireworks section of Sitio Estaca, Barangay Minolos. Firefighters received the alarm at 9:33 PM and arrived at the scene within five minutes. They managed to control the flames by 9:48 PM and declared a full knockdown by 9:59 PM. The incident was contained at the first alarm level due to the prompt response.
Acting Fire Marshal Fire Inspector Anadith Trasporte reported that while there were 15 fireworks stalls in the area, nine were completely razed by the intense fire. During the chaos, ignited fireworks shot into the air, creating an unintended and dangerous display in the night sky.
Two Men Sought as Persons of Interest
Initial investigation points to human error as the likely cause. According to witness Leo Bayno, two unidentified men who had purchased a 'triangle' firecracker from the last stall lit it inside the stall itself and then threw it onto another tray of fireworks. This reckless act allegedly ignited the initial flames.
The two individuals fled the scene immediately as the fire spread. Their motorcycle, which was parked nearby, was also consumed by the fire. Inspector Trasporte confirmed that the Barili Philippine National Police (PNP) is assisting in the pursuit of the two men, who are considered persons of interest. "We can only say that the two men were one of the reasons why the fire started in that area," Trasporte stated.
Safety Protocols and Staggering Losses
Trasporte emphasized that vendors in the area are regularly required to attend fire safety seminars before they are allowed to sell. Clear signage prohibiting smoking and the testing of fireworks is also posted. Despite these measures, the incident occurred.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported from the fire. However, the financial impact is severe. Vendors collectively estimate the total damage to their stalls and inventory to exceed P2 million. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the extreme hazards associated with fireworks, especially in densely packed retail areas.
