PCG Rescues 253 from Distressed Vessel off Basilan Amid Tropical Storm
Coast Guard Saves 253 from Storm-Hit Vessel in Basilan

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) executed a successful large-scale rescue operation on Friday, February 6, saving 253 individuals from a vessel in distress off the coast of Basilan province. The incident occurred near Lampinigan Island in Isabela City, the provincial capital, highlighting the PCG's critical role in maritime emergencies.

Rescue Details and Passenger Transfer

According to the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM), the distressed vessel was identified as MBCA Julifer. It was traveling from Zamboanga City to Laminusa Island in Sulu when it encountered severe weather conditions caused by Tropical Storm Basyang, leading to the emergency situation.

The CGDSWM reported that all 253 people on board, including 16 crew members, were rescued without any injuries. The rescue operation involved a coordinated effort with multiple assets:

  • 205 passengers were transferred to the PCG vessel BRP Tubbataha (MRRV-4401) and safely transported to Zamboanga City Pier.
  • 21 passengers were moved to a Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group patrol boat and taken to Isabela Port.
  • 11 passengers and 16 crew members remained aboard MBCA Julifer, which was then escorted safely to Isabela City under PCG supervision.

Coordination and Safety Measures

The PCG launched the rescue operations in close coordination with the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices of Basilan province and Isabela City. This collaborative approach ensured a swift and effective response, minimizing risks during the transfer of passengers in challenging sea conditions.

The successful outcome underscores the importance of preparedness and inter-agency cooperation in handling maritime incidents, especially during adverse weather events like tropical storms.
