Christmas Day Fire Threatens WA Town, Burns 3,700 Hectares
Emergency Fire Near Boddington on Christmas Day

A major bushfire sparked a Christmas Day emergency in Western Australia, threatening a small town and forcing residents to flee their homes during the holiday.

Fire Crews Battle Overnight Blaze

On the night of December 25, 2025, an emergency-level fire crept to within just a few kilometers of the Boddington town site. The community is located approximately 130 kilometers southeast of Perth. Firefighters worked tirelessly through Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to protect the area.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that the blaze remained uncontrolled for a significant period, consuming nearly 3,700 hectares of land. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) later provided some relief, downgrading the fire to a Watch and Act level on the morning of Friday, December 26, as humidity increased and containment lines were strengthened.

Residents Evacuate, Animals in Tow

The sudden intensification of the fire led to immediate evacuations. According to reports, about 50 people sought refuge at an evacuation center set up at the Sports Pavilion in the nearby town of Williams. Many of those displaced arrived with their animals, highlighting the urgent and personal nature of the threat.

Boddington Shire President Eugene Smalberger explained that the fire had been burning in the area for two weeks. However, extreme heat caused it to flare up dangerously, starting a spot fire much closer to town than authorities had anticipated.

Challenging Conditions for Firefighters

DFES Assistant Commissioner Stuart Wade confirmed the gravity of the situation, stating the fire had approached within 2 kilometers of the town site on Thursday night. While overnight conditions improved, he warned that expected increases in wind throughout Friday would continue to challenge firefighting efforts.

"It's certainly been a challenging 48 hours for our career and volunteer firefighters, with crews working through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and overnight," Assistant Commissioner Wade said. Their work ensured the fire was kept at bay, preventing a potential catastrophe for the Boddington community during what should have been a festive celebration.
