A minor phreatomagmatic eruption was recorded at Taal Volcano in Batangas early Thursday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The eruption occurred at around 1:02 AM, as captured by the agency's thermal cameras focused on the volcano.
Eruption Details
Taal Volcano emitted a plume consisting of smoke and steam that rose approximately 900 meters from the Main Crater. The volcanic activity was recorded by the Daang Kastila Observation Station (VTDK) and Main Crater Observation Station (VTMC) thermal cameras.
Understanding Phreatomagmatic Eruptions
According to state volcanologists, a phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when water interacts with hot magma or other volcanic materials. This interaction triggers an explosion of steam, ash, and other materials from the volcano.
Despite the incident, PHIVOLCS stated that Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, which indicates a low probability of volcanic unrest and no imminent eruption threat.
