A Toyota Vios sustained major front-end damage after colliding with the center railings on F. Llamas Street in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City, in the early hours of New Year's Eve. The incident occurred around 3:00 AM on December 31, 2025.
Sequence of Events and Driver's Account
The driver has been identified as 38-year-old alias "Niel," a resident of Lapu-Lapu City. According to the initial investigation, Niel was traveling northbound and was supposed to turn into Barangay Tisa. However, his vehicle suddenly went straight into the middle of the road where the concrete railings are installed.
The impact was forceful, causing significant engine damage and shattering various parts of the sedan. Niel explained to authorities that he failed to notice the railings because they lacked reflectorized lights or clear road markings. He stated he was merely dropping off friends in Labangon at the time.
Witness Claims and Aftermath
Contrary to the driver's statement, witnesses at the scene reported that the vehicle was moving at high speed. They also suspected that the driver might have been under the influence of alcohol.
Despite the severe wreckage of the automobile, Niel and his passengers managed to exit the vehicle safely. They all refused to be treated at a hospital for any potential injuries.
Ongoing Traffic Investigation
The driver and his damaged Toyota Vios are now under the custody of the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) for a more thorough investigation. Authorities will be looking into all angles, including the driver's condition, the vehicle's speed, and the road safety features at the crash site.
This accident on a major Cebu City street highlights ongoing concerns about road safety infrastructure and driver responsibility, especially during the holiday season.
