Davao Fun Run on April 19 to Fund Coastal Safety and Volunteer Support
The Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary is set to host a community fun run on April 19 at Freedom Park in Davao City, aiming to generate funds for coastal safety initiatives and volunteer support programs. Organizers from the PCGA 802nd Squadron unveiled the event details during the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum at The Annex of SM City Davao on February 12.
Event Details and Objectives
Auxiliary lieutenant commander Marcial Mercado emphasized that the race is designed to assist volunteers and promote environmental awareness and maritime safety in coastal communities. "This is a community race meant to help our volunteers and encourage people to take part in keeping our coastal areas clean and safe," Mercado stated.
The fun run will feature three distance categories: 3K, 5K, and 10K. Routes will start at Freedom Park and extend toward turning points near Aeon Towers and Toyota Lanang, providing participants with scenic views of the city.
Registration and Participation
Marketing consultant Malou Pelletier outlined the registration fees: P800 for the 3K category, P900 for 5K, and P1,100 for 10K. Each fee includes a race bib, singlet, and finisher's medal. Groups registering at least 10 runners will receive one free slot as an incentive.
Participants as young as 10 years old are eligible to join if physically capable, while younger children can participate under parental supervision. Organizers aim to attract a minimum of 400 runners to ensure a successful turnout.
Fund Allocation and Community Impact
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Coastal Community Auxiliary Division, which supplies fisherfolk and volunteers with essential gear such as boats, life vests, and radios. Pelletier highlighted that funds will be directed to organized communities to guarantee proper distribution and sustainable use. "When emergencies happen, many volunteers lack basic safety tools. This activity will help address those needs," she explained.
