The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a significant surge in Filipinos seeking emotional and psychological support during the recent holiday season. According to a social media post from the agency last Saturday, nearly 1,000 individuals reached out to the DOH Mental Health Hotline for assistance.
Holiday Period Sees Spike in Calls for Help
Data provided by the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) shows that from December 21, 2025, to January 2, 2026, the hotline received a total of 961 calls. The volume of calls notably increased on December 30, 2025, indicating a peak in emotional distress as the year ended.
Health authorities analyzed the common reasons for these calls. The top complaints recorded during this period included:
- Relationship or lovelife problems
- Anxiety
- Symptoms of depression
Emotional Fatigue During Festive Season
The DOH explained that this upward trend in calls reflects the emotional and mental exhaustion experienced by some individuals during the holidays. Contrary to being a purely joyful time, the season often brings intense stress and personal challenges that can overwhelm a person's mental well-being.
To ensure continued support, the department has committed to extending its monitoring of mental health cases until January 5. This post-holiday surveillance is a proactive measure to guarantee a swift response to any emerging concerns from the public.
Public Reassurance and Call for Awareness
The DOH has reassured the public that all its mental health hotlines will remain open and operational. It strongly encourages anyone experiencing emotional difficulty, grief, or psychological distress to not hesitate in seeking professional help and support.
Furthermore, the agency reiterated its call for greater public awareness and understanding of mental health issues. It emphasizes that seeking help is a sign of strength and a crucial step toward recovery, urging everyone to support those who may be struggling in silence.
