Erpat in Central Visayas Promotes Safe Spaces Act for Women's Month

Members of the Empowerment and Reaffirmation of Paternal Abilities (Erpat) in Central Visayas actively engaged in the celebration of National Women's Month, where they highlighted the Bawal Bastos Law as a crucial component of the campaign against Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC). This event underscores the growing role of father-led organizations in promoting gender equality and community safety.

Regional Meeting Focuses on Safe Spaces Act

During the Regional Quarterly Meeting at the Erpat Field Office 7, Ashley Conde, Women Sector Representative from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), was invited to discuss the Safe Spaces Act of 2019. This legislation aims to protect individuals from sexual and gender-based harassment in public spaces, workplaces, schools, and online platforms. The discussion provided a platform for raising awareness about legal protections and fostering a culture of respect.

Open Forum and Community Engagement

Following the presentation, an open forum allowed participants to ask questions and share their experiences and community issues. This interactive session facilitated a deeper understanding of local challenges and encouraged collaborative problem-solving among Erpat members and stakeholders.

Accomplishment Reports and Program Updates

In the afternoon session, Erpat members from various Local Government Units (LGUs) in Cebu and Bohol presented their accomplishment reports and updates on community programs. Currently, there are 31 LGUs in Central Visayas with active Erpat federations. These groups function as organized bodies of fathers strengthening their roles in family and community through DSWD-supported initiatives.

Training and Development Initiatives

Barangay-level orientations and trainings have been conducted, including nine learning modules and Gender Sensitivity Training (GST), to enhance fathers' knowledge and responsibilities. These educational efforts are designed to build capacity and promote proactive involvement in gender-sensitive practices.

Community-Building Activities

Beyond the anti-VAWC campaign, Erpat has launched clean-up drives, tree planting, and sports activities to strengthen community unity and well-being. These initiatives not only address environmental and social issues but also foster camaraderie and collective action among members.

Leadership Perspectives on Fatherhood and Community Safety

According to DSWD 7 Regional Director Shalaine Marie Lucero, the participation of fathers is vital in promoting respect, gender equality, and the protection of women and children, leading to safer and more resilient communities. This emphasis on paternal involvement highlights a shift towards inclusive approaches in social welfare and development efforts.
