The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) has issued important advice for Dabawenyos regarding safe motherhood, particularly for high-risk pregnant women.
Dr. Katrina A. Abarcar, volunteer consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, emphasized that high-risk pregnant women should avoid heavy physical exercise. She explained that pregnant women prone to bleeding, those carrying twins with poor growth, and those with uncontrolled high blood pressure are not allowed to engage in physical exercise. Dr. Abarcar made these remarks during the Kapihan at SM City Annex, Ecoland, Davao City, on May 25, 2026.
On the other hand, healthy pregnant women are permitted to perform moderate-intensity exercises, such as walking. Dr. Abarcar recommended around 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day, five times a week, for regular pregnancies. Even a brisk walk that leaves one slightly out of breath can be beneficial, she noted.
Dr. Abarcar also advised diabetic patients to stay physically active after meals to help burn calories. She highlighted that the ideal age range for pregnancy, both physically and mentally, is between 20 and 35 years, as the body is fully mature during this period.
Additionally, the doctor cautioned against becoming pregnant immediately after giving birth, especially for those who underwent cesarean delivery. She stressed that the body needs sufficient time to recover, recommending an interval of 12 to 18 months before the next pregnancy.
Dr. Abarcar encouraged mothers to take good care of their children and urged women to undergo prenatal checkups after confirming their pregnancy. Regular prenatal care is essential for monitoring the health of both mother and baby, she concluded.
