Mandaue City Uncle Arrested for Stabbing Nephew in Drunken Domestic Dispute
A 41-year-old man was apprehended by authorities after he allegedly stabbed his 10-year-old nephew during a violent domestic altercation early Thursday morning, March 26, 2026, in Barangay Looc, Mandaue City. The incident, which unfolded around 5:30 a.m. along C. Ouano Street, was reported to police approximately 20 minutes later, triggering an immediate response from Police Station 5 of the Mandaue City Police Office.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The suspect, identified only by the alias "Chester," is the uncle of the young victim, Jaymark Genggani. A 15-year-old relative, Paul Jade Ginggani, witnessed the horrifying event as it transpired inside their shared family home. According to MCPO spokesperson Mercy Villaro-Kantuna, the suspect had just returned from Barangay Cambaro after a drinking session and was allegedly heavily intoxicated at the time of the attack.
"They were all living in the same house in Barangay Looc. The suspect, who is the uncle of the victim, had come from Cambaro where he had been drinking and arrived home already intoxicated," Villaro-Kantuna stated in a phone interview.
Escalation of a Family Argument
The confrontation began when the suspect engaged in a heated argument with the victim's older sibling over the rearrangement of beds within the household. This disagreement quickly escalated into a broader commotion involving multiple family members, exacerbated by the suspect's drunken state.
"There was a commotion inside the house involving the cousins. The suspect was already drunk, and the argument intensified," Villaro-Kantuna explained.
Tragically, the 10-year-old victim, Jaymark, woke up due to the loud noise and inadvertently became the target of the suspect's uncontrolled rage. "The child woke up because of the noise, and he became the focus of the suspect's rage. He was stabbed in the back using a screwdriver," the spokesperson detailed. Authorities later recovered a six-inch screwdriver believed to be the weapon used in the assault.
Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
The victim was promptly transported to Mandaue City District Hospital by his grandmother for urgent medical treatment. Fortunately, he is now in stable condition and has been discharged from the hospital, though he is scheduled to return for follow-up checkups and laboratory results to ensure a full recovery.
Meanwhile, the suspect surrendered to responding police officers and was taken into custody. He is currently detained as charges are being prepared against him for violation of Republic Act 7610, also known as the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, or the Child Abuse Law. This case highlights the severe consequences of domestic violence and the critical importance of protecting vulnerable minors from such traumatic incidents.
