In a remarkable surge of civic engagement, over 160,000 residents of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have applied to become registered voters for the upcoming elections, far exceeding official projections. This significant turnout highlights a growing interest in the region's political processes as key electoral events approach.
Voter Registration Numbers Soar Beyond Expectations
According to data released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), a total of 161,429 applications were filed between February 9 and March 31, 2026. This figure surpasses the Comelec's initial projection of 150,000 registrants, indicating a robust participation rate among BARMM residents. The registration drive covers two major elections: the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections (BPE) scheduled for September 2026 and the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) set for November 2026.
Regional Breakdown of Voter Applications
The distribution of applicants across BARMM provinces reveals varied levels of engagement. Lanao del Sur leads with the highest number of applicants at 50,918, followed by Maguindanao del Norte with 31,666 and Maguindanao del Sur with 26,175. Other areas include Basilan with 21,734 applicants, the Special Geographic Area with 16,505, and Tawi-Tawi with 14,431. This regional data underscores widespread participation throughout the autonomous region.
Factors Driving High Voter Interest
In a phone interview, Comelec Chairman George Garcia attributed the high number of applications to the keen interest of BARMM residents in participating in the forthcoming elections. He cited the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections, which have faced several postponements, and the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections as key factors motivating registrations. Garcia emphasized that these events are pivotal for the region's governance and youth representation, encouraging residents to exercise their democratic rights.
The overwhelming response not only reflects a desire for political involvement but also signals a positive step toward strengthening democratic institutions in the Bangsamoro region. As the elections draw nearer, this surge in voter registration sets the stage for a highly participatory and potentially transformative electoral process.
