Cebu Greats Start MPBL Season with New Lineup vs Rizal

The Cebu Greats are set to tip off their 2026 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) season with a highly anticipated matchup against the Rizal Xentro Mall Golden Coolers this Friday, April 10, at 5 p.m. The game will be held at the Alonte Sports Complex, marking the start of what promises to be an exciting campaign for the Cebu-based squad.

Major Roster Overhaul for Enhanced Performance

In a strategic move to bolster their competitiveness, the Cebu Greats have implemented significant changes to their lineup during the offseason. The team's management focused on improving teamwork and strengthening their roster to better challenge the league's top contenders. This overhaul includes the addition of several new players who are expected to make an immediate impact.

New Additions and Veteran Returns

Key new signings for the Cebu Greats include Brian Heruela, Emman Calo, and Simon Camacho, all of whom bring valuable experience and skills to the court. In a nostalgic twist, veteran Cebuano player Dondon Hontiveros will make a return to active play. Currently serving as an assistant coach, Hontiveros will suit up alongside his son, Ice Hontiveros, creating a unique father-son dynamic on the team.

Opening Day Schedule and League Format

The MPBL's opening day will feature multiple games across different venues. In addition to the Cebu Greats vs. Rizal Golden Coolers matchup, another game at 7 p.m. will see host Biñan take on the GenSan Warriors, led by Cebuano player Nic Cabanero. Meanwhile, at the Caloocan Sports Complex, the San Juan Knights will face the Pasay Voyagers, and Batang Kankaloo will battle the Quezon City Black Bulls.

The 2026 MPBL season will follow a round-robin format, where all teams play against each other to determine the top performers. The highest-ranking teams will advance to the playoffs, culminating in a best-of-seven finals series between the best teams from the North and South divisions to crown the 2026 champion.
