Cebuano Teen Bryant Julyant Monsanto Makes History on U-17 National Football Team
Pride of Balamban City, pride of Cebu Province. This is the tagline now embraced by Bryant Julyant Monsanto, a 16-year-old football prodigy from Balamban, Cebu, who has made history as the only Cebuano home-grown talent selected for the 2026 U-17 Philippine Men's National Football Team. The team is set to compete in international competitions starting April 11, 2026, in Surabaya, Indonesia.
A Rising Star from Humble Beginnings
Bryant Julyant, son of entrepreneurs Bryant and Jomilyn Monsanto, is believed to significantly bolster the national team's strength. His football journey began with the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Football Club in Balamban, where he honed his skills. Simultaneously, he became a reliable player for the Balamban Football Club, showcasing his early potential in local Cebu competitions.
His talent caught the eye of scouts during a tournament in Cebu in 2023, when the coach and owner of Makati FC was present. It was his former coaches in Cebu who introduced him, leading to a pivotal opportunity. His father, Bryant, convinced him not to let this chance slip away, and Julyant seized it, moving to Manila to pursue his dreams.
Sacrifice and Triumph Away from Home
For nearly two years, Julyant endured being away from his parents, fully dedicating himself to his training and development. His perseverance paid off unexpectedly when he received a letter from the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) dated March 29, 2026, confirming his selection for the national team.
"When we read the letter from the PFF that he was included, our hair stood on end. His efforts there far from home have borne fruit. He was alone in Manila at a very young age, and yet he achieved being part of the national team. We are extremely happy," expressed his father, Bryant, reflecting the family's overwhelming joy and pride.
International Debut and Team Prospects
Playing as a midfielder, Julyant will join the national team in facing not only Asian nations but also teams like Australia. The Philippines is placed in Group B alongside Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. While the overall team's skill and prowess are yet to be fully measured, one thing is certain: Monsanto has already carved his name into Philippine football history.
His selection marks a significant milestone for local talent development in Cebu, inspiring young athletes across the province. As the competition approaches, all eyes will be on this young Cebuano star as he represents his country on the international stage.
