Calderon Cup Expands with Women's Volleyball Tournament to Foster Grassroots Sports in Cebu's 7th District
In a significant move to enhance grassroots sports development in the seventh district of Cebu province, the Calderon Cup is introducing a new volleyball tournament specifically for women aged 21 and under. This initiative, part of Congresswoman Patsy Calderon's ongoing project, aims to provide young female athletes from the district with opportunities to showcase their talents and potentially secure athletic scholarships for college.
Organizational Meeting Sets the Stage
The chief organizer of the Calderon Cup, Atty. Ramil Abing, along with Jordan Paca and Blake Diao, spearheaded a crucial meeting with coordinators and coaches from the seventh district on Thursday, April 15, at the Moalboal Municipal Hall. This gathering was pivotal in outlining the tournament's structure and goals, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned in supporting the athletes.
Tournament Rules and Eligibility
To maintain fairness and focus on development, specific rules have been established for the competition. Each team is permitted to register 12 players plus two liberos, with the requirement that all participants must be bona fide residents of the municipalities they represent. Emphasizing its role as a development league, the tournament will enforce a no substitution rule for the first two sets, meaning different sets of six players will compete in each of these initial sets to maximize playing time and experience for all involved.
Competition Schedule and Host Municipalities
The volleyball tournament is scheduled to unfold over two weekends next month, bringing excitement to multiple locations within the district. Badian will host the opening days on May 22 and 23, followed by matches in Alcantara on May 24. The competition will then culminate in Moalboal, which will serve as the venue for the final three days from May 29 to 31, promising a thrilling conclusion to the event.
Community Support and Long-Term Vision
Atty. Ramil Abing, chairman of the organizing committee, emphasized the collective effort needed, stating, "Let us work together for the success of the tournament and to give the girls an experience they will never forget." This sentiment is echoed by widespread enthusiasm from residents across the eighth municipalities—Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc, and Ginatilan—who have expressed joy over Congresswoman Calderon's initiatives, which have invigorated the district.
The eight mayors of these municipalities have openly endorsed the program, recognizing its potential for positive outcomes in youth development. Congresswoman Calderon has already announced plans to make this an annual program, ensuring continuity in nurturing young talents. Reflecting on the program's growth, it began with a 21-under basketball tournament launched on March 21, set to conclude in early May, and now expands to include this volleyball event, with future plans for a football competition and kite festival already in the works.
Future Prospects and Impact
Looking ahead, the Calderon Cup aims to produce athletes who could eventually compete in major leagues such as Cesafi, UAAP, or NCAA. As noted by organizers, within two or three years, we may see graduates of this program making their mark on larger stages. Already, several local coaches have been scouted, highlighting the immediate benefits and growing interest in the district's sports scene. This expansion not only boosts athletic opportunities but also fosters community pride and engagement, setting a strong foundation for sustained sports development in Cebu's seventh district.
