A brand-new women's Under-21 volleyball tournament is set to make its debut as part of the Calderon Cup, with the inaugural event scheduled to commence on May 22, 2026, at the Ronda Sports Complex in Cebu. This exciting addition to the sporting calendar is a key component of a grassroots sports initiative spearheaded by Congresswoman Patsy Calderon, designed to foster athletic talent and provide life-changing opportunities for young athletes across the region.
Empowering Young Athletes Through Grassroots Development
The primary goal of this tournament is to offer a competitive platform for young female volleyball players from the 7th District of Cebu, allowing them to showcase their skills and potentially secure college scholarships. By focusing on youth development, the event aims to nurture the next generation of volleyball stars while promoting sports participation at the community level. Teams will be drawn from eight distinct towns: Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal, Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc, and Ginatilan, ensuring broad representation and local pride.
Organizational Efforts and Team Regulations
The tournament is being meticulously organized by a dedicated team led by Atty. Ramil Abing, in collaboration with Jordan Paca and Blake Diao. Recently, they convened a meeting with coaches and coordinators from the district at the Moalboal Municipal Hall to finalize all logistical and operational details, ensuring a smooth and well-coordinated event. Each participating team will be permitted to roster up to 12 players, including two liberos, with a strict requirement that all players must be official residents of the town they represent, reinforcing community ties and authenticity.
Innovative Rules to Maximize Player Experience
As a development-focused league, the tournament will implement special rules to enhance player involvement and learning. In the first two sets of each match, teams will be prohibited from making substitutions, and each set must feature a completely different group of six players. This unique approach is designed to give more athletes valuable court time and practical experience, emphasizing skill development over competitive intensity. The competition is scheduled to unfold over two action-packed weekends in May, with games hosted in the towns of Badian, Alcantara, and Moalboal, spreading the excitement across multiple venues.
