Ghinlou Baran Secures Victory in Davao Beach Ping Pong Comeback

The 2026 Araw ng Dabaw Beach Ping Pong Tournament concluded on March 8 at Dagat Fiesta Beach Resort in Davao City, with Ghinlou Baran emerging as the women's singles champion. Baran, who returned to competition after a prolonged break from the sport, defeated runners-up Leila Roble and Deive Pongase to claim the title.

Preparation and Passion Drive Baran's Success

In a post-match interview, Baran attributed her win to a week of intensive training and the unwavering support of her coach. She stated, "My preparation for the tournament involved returning to training after several months away from table tennis. Winning is always an honor, but above all, I simply enjoy playing beach ping pong." Her victory underscores the dedication required to excel in this unique sport variant.

Men's and Inclusive Divisions Showcase Diverse Talent

The tournament also featured strong performances across other categories. In men's singles, Pee Jay Atienza triumphed over Lapoy Custudio and Gil Ablanque, while Edward Saldaña secured the men's singles class B crown. Highlighting the event's inclusivity, Jobert Lumanta won the PWD Singles title by defeating Domingo Liquin.

Youth and Style Awards Add Flair to Competition

Young athletes shone brightly, with 15-year-old Juliana Shane Retaga taking first place in the 15-and-under Singles division, followed by Moneyah Mary Blair Nunez and Richbill Nuñez. Additionally, Dominic Lacambra and Leila Jocell Roble were honored as the best-dressed players in the men's and women's beach ping pong attire categories, adding a stylish element to the competitive atmosphere.

Beach Ping Pong Adapts Traditional Sport for Sand Play

Organized by the Beach Ping Pong Association of the Philippines, the two-day event was part of the 2026 Araw ng Dabaw celebrations, showcasing Davao City's vibrant sports scene. Tournament director Friendee L. Nuñez explained that beach ping pong modifies traditional table tennis for outdoor sand environments. Key adaptations include a smaller 4.5-by-9-foot table, larger 50mm balls, and sandpaper-coated rackets designed to endure harsh weather conditions.

Looking Ahead to Future Table Tennis Events

With the beach tournament concluded, Davao's table tennis community is now gearing up for the 89th Araw ng Dabaw Table Tennis Tournament, scheduled from March 20 to 22 at the Spin Davao Table Tennis Center on Jacinto Extension. This upcoming event promises to continue the city's tradition of fostering competitive spirit and athletic excellence.
