The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has taken a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in the Philippines by distributing a total of 1,927 free SIM cards to students in Tarlac. This initiative is part of the Bayanihan SIM Card Distribution Program, which was officially launched to address the urgent need for digital connectivity and promote inclusivity in the nation's ongoing digital transformation efforts.
Enhancing Access for Geographically Isolated Areas
One of the primary goals of this program is to provide reliable internet connectivity to students residing in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs). By ensuring that these learners have access to online resources, the DICT aims to support their educational journeys and integrate them into the broader digital landscape. Each SIM card distributed includes a generous allocation of 25GB of free mobile data, valid for an entire 12-month period, offering sustained support for academic and personal use.
Distribution Details Across Schools
The distribution was carried out across multiple educational institutions in Tarlac, with specific allocations to ensure widespread coverage. A total of 925 SIM cards were provided to learners from Sta. Juliana Elementary School, while 550 SIM cards were distributed to students at Sta. Juliana High School. Additionally, 452 SIM cards were received by Maruglu Elementary School, highlighting the program's reach into various community settings.
Target Beneficiaries and Support Services
Beneficiaries of the Bayanihan SIM Card Distribution Program include residents of GIDAs, individuals enrolled in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, those experiencing limited internet access, and people who rely on SIM cards to connect to essential online services.
