A major development has emerged in the investigation of the explosive incident that rocked a rubber plantation in Basilan province, as the primary suspect has voluntarily turned himself in to authorities.
The suspect, identified as a 19-year-old male, surrendered to the Lamitan City Police Station on Tuesday afternoon, following the explosion that injured two rubber tappers at the plantation owned by the Tumahubong Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Development Cooperative.
The incident occurred on Monday morning when an improvised explosive device detonated within the plantation premises in Barangay Colonia. The explosion left two workers with injuries, though both are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Dan C. Lunario, the acting city police chief, confirmed the surrender and stated that the suspect is currently undergoing questioning to determine the motive behind the attack and whether he acted alone or as part of a larger group.
Security concerns in agricultural areas have been a persistent issue in the region, making this surrender a significant achievement for local law enforcement. The swift resolution of this case brings some relief to the local farming community, which depends on the rubber plantation for their livelihood.
Authorities have intensified security measures around agricultural facilities in the area and are continuing their investigation to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.
