NIA Completes River Desilting, Dike Project in Zamboanga Sibugay, Aiding 33 Farmers
NIA Completes Baluran River Project in Zamboanga Sibugay

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has successfully wrapped up a significant infrastructure project in Zamboanga Sibugay, aimed at safeguarding vital agricultural water sources. The initiative focused on the Baluran River in Tupilac, RT Lim, where desilting and river-clearing activities were conducted to improve irrigation efficiency and prevent future damage.

Project Timeline and Key Infrastructure

Managed through the Zamboanga Sibugay Irrigation Management Office, the work commenced on September 7, 2025, and was finalized in the last week of December. A central component of the project was the construction of a three-kilometer protection dike. This structure is integral to the Baluran-Tupilac Communal Irrigation System, designed to shield the area's water distribution network.

Addressing Environmental and Agricultural Challenges

The primary goals were multifaceted. Crews worked to remove accumulated silt, which can choke waterways and reduce water flow to fields. Furthermore, the project stabilized the riverbanks to prevent erosion and reduced potential damage to irrigation facilities during the rainy season or periods of increased water flow. This proactive maintenance is crucial for ensuring a reliable water supply.

Direct Impact on Local Farmers

The direct beneficiaries of this infrastructure upgrade are 33 local farmers. The enhanced and protected irrigation system serves a total of 214 hectares of agricultural land, securing their livelihoods and boosting crop productivity. This intervention helps mitigate the risks of flooding and water shortage that can devastate harvests.

NIA emphasized its ongoing commitment to strengthening irrigation infrastructure across the region. This project was carried out in partnership with the local government units of Tungawan and RT Lim, highlighting a collaborative approach to rural development and water resource management.
