Shear Line and Northeast Monsoon Trigger Widespread Rainfall Across Philippine Regions

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a weather bulletin indicating that the shear line and northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, will bring significant rainfall to various parts of the country on Sunday. According to the 4 a.m. update, these weather systems are expected to affect multiple regions, prompting warnings about potential hazards.

Affected Areas and Weather Conditions

PAGASA reported that the shear line will cause cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms in several key regions. The affected areas include:

  • Mimaropa
  • Bicol Region
  • Western Visayas
  • Aurora
  • Rizal
  • Laguna
  • Quezon
  • Northern Samar
  • Eastern Samar

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies with rains to Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, and the rest of Calabarzon. The weather bureau has cautioned that moderate to heavy rains in these regions could lead to possible flash floods or landslides, urging residents to stay vigilant.

Wind and Coastal Conditions

In addition to rainfall, PAGASA highlighted wind patterns and sea conditions. Northern Luzon, the eastern section of Central Luzon, and the eastern section of Southern Luzon will experience strong to gale northeast winds, resulting in rough to very rough coastal waters. The rest of Luzon will see moderate to strong northeast winds, causing moderate to rough seas. In contrast, Visayas and Mindanao will have light to moderate northeast to southwest winds with slight to moderate coastal waters, indicating less severe conditions in these areas.

Update on Low Pressure Area and Previous Storm Impact

PAGASA confirmed that no new low pressure area (LPA) is currently being monitored, following the dissipation of an LPA at 8 a.m. on Saturday. This LPA was formerly Tropical Storm Basyang, with the international name Penha. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that Basyang affected 64,360 families in Western Visayas, Negros Island, Central Visayas, and Caraga regions. Tragically, the storm left at least five people dead, including four family members who perished in a landslide in Northern Mindanao.

For the rest of Luzon, isolated light rains are expected due to the northeast monsoon, with no significant impact anticipated. Other parts of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms. Residents are advised to monitor updates from PAGASA and take necessary precautions against weather-related risks.
