Shear Line Triggers Widespread Rain and Flooding Threats Across the Philippines
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA) issued a weather bulletin on Sunday, warning of moderate to heavy rains affecting several parts of the country due to the presence of a shear line. In its 4 a.m. update, the state weather bureau highlighted the potential for significant rainfall and associated hazards, urging residents to stay vigilant.
Affected Regions and Weather Conditions
According to PAGASA, the shear line is expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over multiple areas. The impacted regions include:
- Visayas
- Bicol Region
- Quezon
- Oriental Mindoro
- Romblon
In these locations, the weather disturbance may lead to persistent downpours, increasing the risk of adverse conditions.
Flooding Risks and Localized Impacts
PAGASA emphasized that localized flooding is possible, particularly in urbanized, low-lying, or river-adjacent areas. The agency noted that some provinces, such as Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar, could experience worsened impacts due to significant rainfall triggered by the shear line. Residents in these vulnerable zones are advised to take precautionary measures and monitor updates from authorities.
Weather Patterns in Other Parts of the Country
Meanwhile, Mindanao and the rest of Mimaropa are forecast to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, primarily caused by localized thunderstorms. In contrast, Metro Manila and the remaining areas of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, driven by the northeast monsoon.
Coastal and Marine Conditions
The weather system is also influencing coastal waters across the archipelago. Luzon and Visayas are expected to have moderate to rough coastal waters due to moderate to strong northeast winds. In Mindanao, moderate northeast to northeast winds and slight to moderate seas are anticipated, which could affect maritime activities and travel.
PAGASA continues to monitor the situation and advises the public to stay informed through official channels for any further developments or warnings related to the shear line and its effects on Philippine weather.
