Pagasa Warns: Tropical Depression Basyang May Intensify Before Mindanao Landfall
Tropical Depression Basyang May Strengthen Before Landfall

Pagasa Issues Alert as Tropical Depression Basyang Enters Philippine Area of Responsibility

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas has issued a critical weather advisory regarding Tropical Depression "Basyang," which has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). According to the latest monitoring, this weather disturbance poses a significant threat to several regions, with potential intensification and hazardous conditions expected in the coming days.

Potential Intensification and Projected Path

In an interview on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Jhomer Eclarino, the Chief Weather Forecasting Specialist at Pagasa Visayas, provided detailed insights into the current status and forecast for Basyang. The tropical depression was last observed approximately 735 kilometers east of Surigao del Sur, marking its entry into the PAR. Eclarino emphasized that while Basyang is currently classified as a tropical depression, there is a high probability it will strengthen into a tropical storm before making landfall in Eastern Mindanao.

Based on the projected trajectory, the center of Basyang is expected to pass through the southern portion of Central Visayas. This path will likely affect Cebu and neighboring provinces starting from Friday, February 6. However, Eclarino cautioned that due to the possibility of changes in direction, the storm's track could shift upward or downward, requiring continuous monitoring and updates from Pagasa.

Preparedness Measures and Warnings

Pagasa is prepared to issue Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 or No. 2 for some areas in Central Visayas as the storm approaches. These signals are crucial for alerting residents to potential wind hazards and ensuring preparedness measures are in place. Eclarino highlighted the rainfall forecasts, noting that Cebu is expected to receive between 50 to 100 millimeters of rain, while the entire province could experience 100 to 200 millimeters.

He described this amount of rainfall as strong and dangerous, posing risks such as flooding and landslides. Eclarino issued a stern warning to communities in flood-prone and landslide-susceptible areas, particularly those living near rivers and streams, urging them to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Potential Impacts and Safety Recommendations

If wind signals are elevated, the strong winds associated with Basyang could cause damage to houses made of light materials and agricultural areas. This underscores the importance of heeding Pagasa's advisories and implementing safety measures. Residents are advised to:

  • Stay updated with the latest weather bulletins from Pagasa.
  • Secure loose objects and reinforce structures, especially in vulnerable communities.
  • Avoid traveling during the storm and seek shelter in safe locations.
  • Prepare emergency kits and evacuation plans in case of severe conditions.

As Tropical Depression Basyang continues to develop, Pagasa remains committed to providing timely updates and guidance to ensure public safety across the affected regions.
