A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck on June 24, followed by a magnitude 7.5 quake that damaged infrastructure across the country. The coastal province of La Guaira, north of the capital Caracas, suffered the most severe damage, with dozens of apartment buildings and other structures collapsing.
