Massive Vehicle Mobilization for ASEAN Summit Security in Lapu-Lapu City
In a significant security operation, more than 100 motorcycles and nearly 40 vehicles from various offices of the Regional Highway Patrol Unit (RHPU) in Luzon have arrived in Lapu-Lapu City. These mobility assets are designated for security and escort duties during the upcoming 48th ASEAN Leaders Summit, scheduled for May 8-9, 2026.
Logistics and Arrival Details
According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Wildemar Tiu, the outgoing chief of Highway Patrol Group (HPG) 7, the vehicles arrived on April 10, 2026, at Naval Forces Central (Navforcen) via a Philippine Navy ship from Dagupan. Tiu emphasized that the primary role of these vehicles is to escort heads of state, including transporting them to venues and other locations they will visit during the summit.
In addition to the vehicles already present, more patrol cars from other regions are expected to be dispatched by their headquarters to bolster security efforts. This coordinated deployment underscores the scale of preparations for the high-profile event.
Security Measures and Personnel Deployment
Based on available data, a total of 44 leaders, including one spouse of a leader, and 43 ministers will receive tight security and escort services from HPG personnel. To ensure smooth operations, dry runs for escort protocols are currently being conducted. These exercises are crucial as not all drivers are from Central Visayas, and they need to familiarize themselves with Metro Cebu roads to guarantee seamless travel for delegates.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Tiu has announced that his team is fully prepared to guard the officials. HPG Director Police Brigadier General Rommel Batangan is scheduled to arrive on April 16 to personally inspect the preparations of the personnel, highlighting the importance placed on readiness.
Traffic Impact and Public Advisory
Due to the stringent security measures, certain roads are anticipated to be affected, leading to potential traffic disruptions. Authorities have already called for understanding from motorists and the public. "We are appealing to the public to consider the traffic flow. Fun runs and concerts, especially in the Lapu-Lapu area, have been canceled to provide clear pathways and support for the ASEAN Summit," stated Tiu.
This proactive approach aims to minimize inconvenience while ensuring the safety and efficiency of summit activities.
Regional Security Assessment
On a related note, the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 and the Visayas Command (Viscom) have reported no monitored security threats as the major event approaches. This assessment provides a measure of reassurance amid the extensive security mobilizations, though vigilance remains high to address any unforeseen challenges.
