DFA Confirms Revival of Joint Oil Exploration Talks with China
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has officially confirmed that discussions with China regarding potential joint oil and gas exploration are being revived. This announcement has validated the fears of many Filipinos who have long been apprehensive about such collaborations.
Heightened Tensions and Widespread Opposition
This development comes at a time of escalated tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where territorial disputes have been ongoing. The move has faced serious concerns and opposition from various sectors, including the Armed Forces of the Philippines, legal experts, civil society groups, coastal communities, and local fishers. Many view this initiative as deeply troubling, especially given the current geopolitical climate.
It appears that the DFA, which claims to be acting on behalf of the President, is the primary entity pushing these talks forward. This has raised fundamental questions about the timing and rationale behind the decision.
Questioning the Timing and Choice of Partner
A critical inquiry emerges: why now? Joint exploration projects typically require years to yield results and do not offer immediate benefits or address the urgent oil crisis facing the nation. Additionally, why choose China as a partner when it continues to undermine Philippine sovereign and maritime rights, and other potential partners are available?
While there is a recognized need to strengthen energy security amid the global oil crisis, this must not come at the expense of national sovereignty. The balance between economic interests and territorial integrity is a delicate one that requires careful consideration.
Call for Transparency and Public Accountability
In response to these concerns, there is a strong call for the DFA to fully disclose the nature, scope, and current status of these talks. Any negotiation involving the nation's natural resources is not a private matter but a public one, demanding transparency as a core principle of foreign policy.
Without such openness, the DFA's assertions of protecting sovereignty or upholding the Constitution cannot be meaningfully verified by the Filipino people. If the DFA is confident that these talks genuinely serve the interests of the Filipino people, it should have no hesitation in laying all details on the table for public scrutiny.
This statement was issued by Akbayan President Rafaela David, emphasizing the need for accountability in foreign policy decisions.
