Cebu Archdiocese Announces Simultaneous Bell Tolling for EDSA 40th Anniversary
In a significant commemorative gesture, the Archdiocese of Cebu has revealed that all churches within its jurisdiction will simultaneously toll their bells on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This coordinated action serves as the centerpiece of celebrations marking the 40th Anniversary of the historic EDSA People Power Revolution.
A Call to Remember and Reflect
Through an official social media announcement, the Archdiocese has extended an invitation to the faithful across Cebu to participate in this symbolic event, scheduled precisely for 3:00 p.m. The tolling is designed to last for 40 seconds, a poignant representation of the four decades that have passed since the peaceful revolution that toppled the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
"Through this simultaneous tolling, we join the entire nation in remembering the spirit of EDSA—peaceful, prayerful, and united—while affirming that the work of safeguarding freedom and democracy remains unfinished," stated the Archdiocese. "May this simple but meaningful act awaken conscience, renew hope, and strengthen our commitment as a people and as a Church."
The faithful are encouraged to pause briefly in prayer as the bells resonate, offering intentions for the nation's welfare, integrity in public service, national unity, the healing of democracy, the eradication of corruption, and an end to political dynasties.
A Full Day of Commemorative Events
The bell tolling is just one component of a comprehensive schedule of activities planned for the anniversary. The day will commence with a Holy Mass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño – Pilgrim Center at 1:45 p.m., followed by a formal program at 3:05 p.m.
Subsequently, participants will engage in a peaceful march from the Basilica to Plaza Independencia starting at 3:45 p.m., culminating in a celebratory concert at the plaza at 4:30 p.m. In a unifying visual statement, all attendees are called to wear white attire. The Archdiocese has clarified that if white clothing is unavailable, a white wristband, armband, or headband will suffice.

Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy has issued a powerful statement urging the Cebuano community to actively engage in the forthcoming observance.
