Davao City is gearing up for its 89th Araw ng Dabaw celebration with a robust security plan, as authorities confirm the deployment of at least 4,169 personnel across the city from March 1 to 28, 2026. This announcement was made during the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps on February 18, highlighting the city's commitment to maintaining peace and order during the month-long festivities.
Security Preparations in Full Swing
Police Captain Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), emphasized that preparations are underway to ensure a smooth and disruption-free celebration. The 4,169-strong deployment, which includes police officers stationed along major thoroughfares and key venues, is just the initial force. Tuazon noted that this number does not include potential augmentation from other security units that may be called upon to reinforce operations during peak events.
"We are ready to provide security from March 1 to March 28 with 4,169 personnel, not including other security forces," Tuazon stated, underscoring the DCPO's proactive approach. The police will collaborate closely with other public safety and security agencies to sustain a zero-incident record, building on the success of the 2025 celebration, where 6,380 officers were deployed without any major incidents reported.
Tourism and Funding Highlights
In addition to security measures, the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) has announced that the city government has allocated approximately P50 million to fund major activities for this year's celebration. This investment aims to enhance the event's appeal and support its growing popularity.
Among the key highlights of the 89th Araw ng Dabaw is the Ironman 70.3 triathlon, scheduled for March 20, 21, and 23. This endurance race is expected to attract both local and international participants and spectators, adding to the festive atmosphere. The celebrations will also coincide with the centennial celebration of the historic Davao City Hall, which will unveil its restored neoclassical façade as part of the commemoration.
Growing Visitor Numbers
Tourism officials reported that more than 200,000 visitors flocked to Davao City during last year's Araw ng Dabaw, highlighting the event's increasing appeal as one of the city's premier annual celebrations. This surge in tourism underscores the importance of the security and funding initiatives to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
With comprehensive security plans and significant financial backing, Davao City is poised to host a memorable and secure 89th Araw ng Dabaw, reinforcing its status as a vibrant destination for cultural and sporting events.
