In a significant move to support vulnerable populations, Lapu-Lapu City has successfully distributed subsidized rice to remote island communities, ensuring access to affordable food staples. The initiative, part of the city's State of Preparedness program, aims to extend government services to far-flung barangays, particularly in the Olango Island area.
Initial Distribution in Caubian Island
On Monday, April 13, 2026, a total of 90 sacks of rice arrived at Caubian Island, which is part of Olanggo Island in Lapu-Lapu City. The rice was sold at a subsidized rate of P20 per kilogram, making it accessible to residents facing economic challenges. It is estimated that approximately 429 beneficiaries benefited from this initial distribution.
Priority Groups for Assistance
The program specifically targeted priority groups to ensure that the most vulnerable members of the community received support. These groups included senior citizens, beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), solo parents, and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). By focusing on these demographics, the city aims to address food insecurity and promote social welfare in isolated areas.
Expansion to Other Islands
Following the successful distribution in Caubian, the program is set to expand to neighboring islands. An additional 116 sacks of rice will be delivered to Pangan-an and Caohagan islands. This expansion will benefit a combined total of 577 residents, with 438 beneficiaries in Pangan-an and 139 in Caohagan.
Mayor's Statement on the Initiative
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cindi King-Chan emphasized that this rice distribution is a key component of the city's State of Preparedness. She highlighted the importance of ensuring that government services reach even the most remote barangays, particularly those on islands like Olango. The mayor stated that such efforts are crucial for building resilience and supporting communities in times of need.
Impact and Future Plans
The subsidized rice program not only provides immediate relief to residents but also underscores the city's commitment to food security and disaster preparedness. By delivering affordable rice to island communities, Lapu-Lapu City is taking proactive steps to mitigate the effects of potential crises, such as natural disasters or economic downturns. Future plans may include similar initiatives to further support marginalized groups and enhance overall community well-being.
