Zamboanga Authorities Seize P14M in Smuggled Cigarettes, Arrest Three
In a significant law enforcement operation, personnel from the Regional Maritime Unit-9 (RMU-9) have successfully arrested three individuals and confiscated smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P14 million. The operation took place on Monday, February 23, 2026, in the waters near Sinunuc village, Zamboanga City, marking a major blow against illicit trade activities in the region.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
The RMU-9 reported that the arrests occurred around 8:30 a.m. during a routine seaborne patrol. Officers encountered a motorboat named Yana-1, which was carrying three persons. Upon approach and inspection, authorities discovered that the vessel was loaded with suspected illegal cigarettes. The occupants, identified through aliases as Ab, Aki, and Jul, all of legal age, failed to produce any documentation to verify the legality of the cargo.
The seized contraband included 350 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated worth of P14 million. This substantial haul underscores the scale of smuggling operations that law enforcement agencies are combating in the area.
Aftermath and Commitment to Security
Following the operation, the three suspects, along with the motorboat and the confiscated cigarettes, were transported to the RMU-9 headquarters in Baliwasan village, Zamboanga City, for proper disposition. The RMU-9 has reiterated its dedication to enhancing maritime surveillance to suppress smuggling and transnational crimes, aiming to ensure peace and order in coastal communities.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by authorities to curb illegal activities that threaten economic stability and public safety. The successful operation serves as a reminder of the vigilance required to protect the region's waters from such illicit endeavors.
