Police Operation Nets P1.4 Million in Smuggled Cigarettes, Leads to Arrest in Sultan Kudarat
In a significant law enforcement action, police officers have apprehended an individual and seized smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P1.4 million during an operation in Sultan Kudarat province. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 17, 2026, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat illegal trade activities in the region.
Details of the Arrest and Seizure
According to Police Brigadier General Arnold Ardiente, director of the Police Regional Office-Soccsksargen, the suspect was identified as alias Moy-Moy, a 34-year-old fisherman. The arrest took place around 1:45 a.m. in Purok 5, Kinudalan village, located within the municipality of Lebak in Sultan Kudarat.
Officers from the Lebak Municipal Police Station and the Second Sultan Kudarat Provincial Mobile Force Company were conducting a routine security patrol when they encountered Moy-Moy. He was observed without an upper garment while carrying a carton box, which immediately drew the attention of the patrolling team.
Discovery of Contraband and Further Investigation
Upon inspection, police discovered that the box contained suspected smuggled cigarettes. General Ardiente noted in his report that further observation revealed additional cartons of similar items both inside and outside Moy-Moy's residence, which was open at the time of the incident.
The suspect was arrested after he failed to present any pertinent documents authorizing possession of the goods. In total, operatives seized 33 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarettes, with an estimated value exceeding P1.4 million.
Post-Operation Procedures and Legal Actions
Following the arrest, Moy-Moy and the confiscated smuggled cigarettes were transported to the Lebak Municipal Police Station for proper disposition. Authorities plan to eventually turnover the seized contraband to the Bureau of Customs for further investigation and potential legal proceedings.
