In a decisive move against illegal trade activities, the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) executed a successful operation resulting in the seizure of smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P632,025. The raid took place at Park Homes 2 in Barangay Washington, Escalante City, Negros Occidental, on February 23, 2026, marking a significant victory in the region's sustained anti-smuggling campaign.

Arrests and Operational Details

During the operation, law enforcement officers apprehended three individuals, identified only by their aliases: Mon, aged 27; So, 23; and Van, 22. All suspects are residents of Negros Occidental and were caught red-handed by operatives from the Escalante City Police Station. According to Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, chief of the PRO-NIR Public Information Office, the suspects were actively unloading boxes of illicit cigarettes from a tricycle when they were intercepted.

Malong emphasized that the operation was part of ongoing surveillance and monitoring efforts targeting the distribution of illegal cigarettes in the area. The proactive approach allowed police to act swiftly, ensuring the suspects were detained without incident.

The confiscated items represent a substantial haul of smuggled goods, underscoring the scale of the illicit trade network. Police recovered a diverse array of cigarette brands from the suspects, including:

  • 509 reams and 78 packs of BOSQU cigarettes
  • 181 reams of GTM cigarettes
  • 153 reams of Thunder cigarettes
  • 81 reams of Three Star cigarettes
  • 167 reams of Cannon cigarettes
  • 102 reams of Oris cigarettes
  • 92 reams of 252 cigarettes
  • 94 reams of Mega cigarettes
  • 4 reams of Bison cigarettes
  • 352 packs of assorted cigarettes

Additionally, the tricycle used in the smuggling attempt was impounded as evidence. The suspects are currently held at the custodial facility of the Escalante City Police Station, where they await formal charges for violating Republic Act 10863, also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
