PCO Denies Oplan Kontra Fake News Aims to Shield President, Vows to Name Culprits
The Presidential Communications Office has firmly denied that the primary objective of the recently launched 'Oplan Kontra Fake News' initiative is to protect President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. from misinformation. Secretary Dave Gomez emphasized that this program is designed to safeguard public welfare by combating the spread of false information online.
Public Safety as Core Focus
Secretary Gomez highlighted that the office has been monitoring fake news long before recent issues arose concerning the president's health and the Middle East conflict. He expressed concern that the dissemination of fake news could incite public panic, especially during disasters or national emergencies, underscoring the initiative's critical role in maintaining social stability.
Launch of Collaborative Effort
Yesterday, a joint agreement was signed by the Department of Justice, Presidential Communications Office, and Department of Information and Communications Technology to officially launch Oplan Kontra Fake News. The goal is to accelerate actions against misinformation and swiftly address related cases, promoting a more informed and secure digital environment.
Surge in Misinformation Cases
Secretary Gomez acknowledged a significant spike in the number of fake news instances detected or monitored, particularly those related to the health of the president. He stated that authorities are currently gathering evidence to file appropriate cases against those responsible.
Naming and Shaming Perpetrators
While evidence is being compiled, the office anticipates naming the individuals or groups behind the spread of false information within this week. This move aims to hold perpetrators accountable and deter future misinformation campaigns, reinforcing the government's commitment to transparency and public trust.
