Central Visayas Police Heighten Security for EDSA 40th Anniversary and Anti-Corruption March
Police authorities in Central Visayas have been placed on high alert in preparation for the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This alert coincides with the planned Trillion Peso March, a significant public assembly expected to draw participants from various sectors of society.
Security Plans and Personnel Deployment
Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan, chief of the Police Regional Office 7 (PRO 7), has confirmed that comprehensive security plans are already in place, following directives from PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. The police force is mobilizing approximately 3,400 personnel to be deployed across the entire Central Visayas region. These officers will be strategically positioned at key locations where groups are anticipated to gather for their programs and activities.
In addition to monitoring streets and public spaces, security measures will focus on protecting critical infrastructure to maintain order and peace throughout the events. PRO 7 has also established coordination with Local Government Units (LGUs), force multipliers, and other stakeholders to enhance operational effectiveness.
Respect for Peaceful Assembly and Legal Compliance
General Maranan emphasized the police's commitment to upholding the right to peaceful assembly and free expression. "We fully respect the right of our people to peacefully assemble and express their views. At the same time, we strongly encourage those planning to participate in public assemblies to comply with existing laws and procedures," he stated. This balanced approach aims to foster a secure environment while respecting democratic freedoms.
Police Colonel George Ylanan, head of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), expressed confidence that the events will proceed peacefully. He noted that progressive groups in Cebu have historically maintained peaceful conduct during such assemblies, especially when collaborating with the Catholic Church, which is involved in this instance.
Logistical Support and Safety Measures
The police are prepared to provide security for all participants and assist traffic enforcers in ensuring smooth traffic flow during the march. Colonel Ylanan reminded organizers and participants to obtain necessary permits from the LGUs, as required by law, to facilitate orderly proceedings.
Currently, no direct security threats have been identified by the police. However, alert levels remain elevated to prevent any potential incidents and ensure the safety of everyone involved. This proactive stance underscores the authorities' dedication to maintaining public safety during these high-profile events.
