Senator Villanueva Commends Flexible GPS Policy for PUV Drivers
Senator Joel Villanueva has publicly praised the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for their decision to avoid making GPS usage a compulsory requirement for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers involved in the service contracting program. This move, announced in April 2026, reflects a responsive approach to the needs of the transportation sector during challenging times.
Support for a More Humane Policy
In a statement, Villanueva expressed gratitude to the DOTr for being receptive to appeals made during a recent PROTECT Committee hearing. He highlighted the importance of implementing policies that are both humane and just, especially as the transport sector grapples with the ongoing oil crisis. "We commend the DOTr for its openness to our calls and the concerns of our fellow citizens in the transportation sector," Villanueva stated.
The senator emphasized that in the midst of this severe crisis, where transport workers urgently need assistance, it is crucial not to impose additional burdens on them. "At a time when our kababayans in the transport sector desperately require help, let us not give them extra burdens," he urged, underscoring the need for supportive measures rather than stringent requirements.
DOTr's Adaptive Approach
The DOTr has demonstrated an ability to adopt a more flexible and adaptive strategy to ensure the smooth implementation of the service contracting program. This decision not to mandate GPS technology is seen as a step towards easing operational pressures on drivers, allowing them to focus on providing essential services without added technological or financial strain.
Villanueva reaffirmed his commitment to supporting programs that alleviate the hardships faced by transport workers. "We will continue to extend our support to initiatives that help ease the burden of our kababayans confronting the realities of this oil crisis," he declared, signaling ongoing advocacy for policies that prioritize the welfare of the sector.
This development highlights a collaborative effort between government agencies and legislative representatives to address critical issues in the transportation industry, with a focus on practicality and compassion in policy-making.
